Susan Stevens Crummel

In January, Frostwood had a famous author come to visit. Susan Stevens Crummel came to chat with the students about her life as an author. She spoke with the children about where she gets her ideas from and how they grow into stories. Mrs. Crummel was very entertaining, she had us rolling on the floor laughing. Two of the students from our class were selected to come up on stage and pretend to be characters in her most recent book, Help Me, Mr. Mutt! They played the parts to perfection!!!! Bravo Ben and Lyla!!!!

Landforms

In Science the children learned about different landforms. As a culminating activity they created and labeled several landforms using playdoh. Some of the landforms they learned about are mountains, lakes, rivers, peninsulas, and islands.

Writer's Workshop

During Writer's Workshop time the children work on their writing. Most of the time the writing is self-selected. On pretty days we will go out on the deck and write in the beautiful Houston weather. At the end the children enjoy sharing their stories with their friends.

Workstations

During Reader's Workshop the children practice their reading several different ways. They Read to Self, which is independent reading. They Read to Someone, which is reading to a buddy and they Listen to Reading, which is listening to a story while following along in the book. The children also work on the computer and I-touches as well during Reader's Workshop.

Math Games

During Math we often play games that help the children with the concepts they are learning. We play 'place value' and 'fact family' games as well as practice our math facts. If you would like to know more about the games that we play just ask and I can provide you with a copy of the game to play at home.

Motion Lab

The students went to the Science lab here at Frostwood and a parent volunteer taught the children about motion. They learned how objects rotate and spin on an axis. The children used 'force' to cause an object to rotate and spin. Who knew that Science could be so much fun?

Balance Lab

In Science the students learned all about balance. They learned how to make an object stable and used counterweights to help balance an object on a popsicle stick. They created their own objects to balance on their desks.
